SOUND SHADOWS: FROM THE ARTISTS
"Two years ago, we three friends—a banjo player/singer, an Irish step dancer, and a puppeteer/dancer/folk singer, created a live show to explore the intersection of our disciplines. Supported by a Catalysts Residency at the Dance Complex, we created Sound Shadows, a 20-minute theatrical concert that uses dance and shadow puppetry to reveal the mechanics of our musicianship and invite our audience into our creative experience. Our mission is to use multiple art forms to direct audiences to hear and see things through fresh eyes/ears. Can we use visual imagery to make audiences hear nuances that they might otherwise miss? Can we combine the familiar and the novel in a way that changes peoples' perspectives?
The thematic material of our show is domestic and feminine, set around a kitchen table, with shadow-theater portraits on the wall and songs about marriage, love, & escape. We aim to inspire audiences to see this world as nuanced and worthy of attention.
When our second round of live shows were canceled due to COVID, we decided to remotely record a 7- track EP album version. The recording process has changed our toolkit. We use nuances like the squeak of dance shoes and the vocal texture revealed through an intimately placed mic to direct the listener’s attention. We include footsteps approaching the mic, the clatter of a teacup, to conjure the physical space in which the music was made.
Our recording is an invitation into a space, not just an auditory experience. It is an auditory hug in a time of isolation."
