The Lives of Bunker Hill Monument

The Lives of Bunker Hill Monument

Presented by National Park Service: U.S. Department of the Interior at Bunker Hill Museum

With 1776 in news headlines and the 250th Commemoration of the Revolutionary War around the corner, we face the urgent question of how to pay tribute to the founding of our nation and enliven the democratic ideals it set forth. “The Lives of Monuments” is a five-part webinar series that brings together scholars, park rangers, and members of the public to address this challenge.

The first event focuses on the Bunker Hill Monument and takes place on March 4, 2021 from 6 to 7:30pm EST over Zoom webinar. Dr. Sarah J. Purcell, Professor of History at Grinnell College, and Lead Park Ranger Dan Gagnon will discuss the stakeholders who constructed this iconic monument, as well as the publics that have animated and re-animated its meaning over centuries.  Audience members will be invited to share their thoughts on what the monument stands for. This program will be hosted by Mellon Humanities Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Emma Silverman.
