All Schubert: String Trio and Trout Quintet

All Schubert: String Trio and Trout Quintet

Presented by Boston Chamber Music Society at Online/Virtual Space

Schubert’s String Trio in B-flat major comprises four brief movements in moderate tempos. Traditional Viennese elegance infuses the work, while passing chromaticism and ornamental figuration lend a distinctive Schubertian sound. Virtuosic flourishes in the violin and an extended viola solo in the Minuet are among the work’s highlights.

The heart of Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major is its fourth movement, a set of variations on his song “The Trout.” Composed during a happy summer spent in Upper Austria, the quintet conveys an idyllic, serene atmosphere and remains one of Schubert’s most beloved chamber works.

Jennifer Frautschi, violin; Marcus Thompson, viola; Yeesun Kim, cello; Thomas Van Dyck, double bass; Gloria Chien, piano
