University of Massachusetts-Amherst Assistant Professor of Music Marianna Ritchey presents a virtual colloquium.
Most of the activist efforts to “save” or “revitalize” classical music in the U.S. are oriented toward one of two goals: they either insist that artists must become entrepreneurs in order to reach new consumer markets, or they demand that the government continue to fund art with grants. In Ritchey\'s talk, she critiques some of the ideological assumptions underlying these goals and then explores some possibilities for music made with anti-capitalist, anarchist, or otherwise radical utopian goals.
