Beethoven's Fidelio

Beethoven's Fidelio

Presented by Promenade Opera Project at Online/Virtual Space

Known as Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio shines as a story steeped in the humanist ideas that fueled the American and French revolutions, praising and calling for physical, political, intellectual, and individual freedoms. ⁣

It tells the story of Leonore, a brave individual who infiltrates a prison by dressing as a man named Fidelio to free her husband, Florestan, who is being held unlawfully as a political prisoner. Along the way, Leonore finds herself entangled in the personal and political chaos of the prison through the unexpected affections of Marzelline, the daughter of the conflicted jailor Rocco, and the corrupt and selfish actions of Don Pizarro, her husband’s captor. ⁣

It is our aim that by using this story to explore freedom and its absence in a variety of forms, modern performers and audiences will be encouraged to explore their own relationships to current issues while immersing themselves in the emotional depth and beauty of this masterful opera.⁣
