The Role of Festivals in Preserving Culture

The Role of Festivals in Preserving Culture

Presented by Fusco & Four at Online/Virtual Space

This session looks at the Detroit Month of Design, an annual multidisciplinary design festival occurring throughout the city of Detroit, as an example of cultural preservation, community building and future forward ideation. Design Core sees and empowers designers as creative problem-solvers who can work hand-in-hand with business, government and communities to develop human-centered and practical solutions.  Some highlights we will share include installations, exhibitions, workshops, and fashion shows.

In the midst of a global pandemic and widespread protests against racial inequality, design solutions that prioritize inclusivity, adaptability and equity have never been more important. This year’s festival programming reflected and explored design solutions to the myriad of challenges faced by Detroit and the global community since the start of 2020.

The session will be facilitated by Kiana Wenzell, Director of the Detroit Month of Design. This talk will explore how design festivals serve as a form of cultural keeping, preservation, education and storytelling.
