Huntington @ HomeSchool: Shakespeare and Race: "This thing of Darkness I Acknowledge mine..."

Presented by The Huntington at Online/Virtual Space

Instructor: Regine Vital, Manager of Curriculum and Instruction

"This thing of darkness, I acknowledge mine..." In The Tempest, Prospero claims Caliban as his "thing of darkness"; this and other moments in the play have contributed to our understanding of the period's conceptions of colonialism and race. In this class (part play discussion, part scene study), we will consider some of Shakespeare's most compelling characters - Caliban, Cleopatra, Othello, and Aaron: the BIPOC folks of Early Modern drama - to explore ideas of race, ethnicity, and identity.
