Sketch Comedy Writing Basics

Sketch Comedy Writing Basics

Presented by Mess + Finesse at Online/Virtual Space

Sketch Writing Basics (Online) - $99
6 Weeks, Sept 20th -Oct 25th, Sundays 2pm-4pm
Instructor: Kenny Gray
This class is for those who want to learn the fundamentals of sketch, leverage their improvised work, or learn a new approach to comedic writing . Over the six sessions, students will learn how to write a "basic" game driven sketch- a structure that helps guide writing and flesh out jokes from your comedic premises. This approach focuses on form over genre so, no matter you comedic sensibilities, this class can help turn your funny thoughts into a stage ready sketches. You can see examples of this type of methodology in sketch comedy shows such as SNL, Key & Peele, The UCB, Inside Amy Schumer, and many more. Students will leave the class having written five new sketches, roughly one new piece per week. All sessions will be held over Zoom. Note: This show has no final performance. It is purely a writing class.
About the instructor: Kenny Gray is the owner and operator of Mess + Finesse, a cast member on ImprovBoston's Mainstage, and the producer/head-writer for Somerville Night Live. He has completed training at The UCB Theatre in NYC, The ImprovBoston Comedy School, and has a Master’s Degree is Business from Boston University. He is also the person writing this in the third person and it feels weird to be doing so. I hope you consider taking the class! I really love helping people bring their silly ideas to life.
Feedback from former students!
"Really solid fundamental way of looking at sketch, and having homework really helped put the fire under my ass to actually write."
"This class was very engaging and I learned a lot. Kenny made it a safe space to learn and grow in by having us collaborate and being pretty encouraging and positive throughout."
"It definitely showed me that I was a lot more capable of writing good content than I thought."
