Piecing it Together: Structure and Plot in Fiction

Presented by Solstice MFA in Creative Writing Program of Pine Manor College at Online/Virtual Space

FREE VIRTUAL CLASS

Six 1.5 hour sessions via Zoom

Wednesdays 7:00 - 8:30 PM

September 2nd, September 9th, September 16th, September 23rd, September 30th, & October 7th.

Have you ever had a story in mind that seemed too big for the page? When you sat down to write it, were you intimidated by the vastness of it? The concept or character was there, but you couldn't sort out what happened next and you soon realized that the story had taken the reins. William Goldman likened writing to carpentry. He said that if you have all the correct tools and material to build a bookcase, you might make a beautiful piece of work, but if it can't hold a book without falling apart, it is not a bookcase. In this class we will strengthen your book's structure. We will discuss the fundamentals of establishing a foundation for your story from beginning to end. We will look at examples of books, short stories and films and see how their creators have dominated structure to produce a fantastic tale. Over the course of six weeks on Zoom, one class per week, we will participate in workshop discussions and exercises to better understand our own ideas; we will broaden our horizons and focus our vision, and by the end, you will be able to structure your story in a way that works. Whether you are an aspiring or accomplished writer, join us to discuss your current work in progress, or even a fresh idea, and we will discover a plan for your story.

Limited to 10 participants.
