Unbound Visual Arts (UVA) is pleased to present the virtual 360 degree exhibition New Narratives: Reclaiming Asian Identity Through Story from July 24 - September 8, 2020.  This curated exhibit can be seen and experienced in the Unbound Visual Arts Virtual Exhibition Gallery 24 hours a day at https://www.unboundvisualarts.org/new-narratives-reclaiming-asian-identity-through-story-virtual. This exhibition showcases 40 works by 25 artists.  The curator Leslie Anne Condon states that the artists are “exploring aspects of their identity through their art, as well as Asian culture and narrative informed by personal experience. Whether the work is referencing the self and body, sexuality and gender, or intergenerational conflict and healing within the Asian community, each artist brings their distinctive perspective to the exhibition through unexpected visuals and contemporary techniques. Collectively, the exhibition offers a partial glimpse rather than a sweeping overview of the many complex issues that Asians and Asian Americans navigate daily as part of our lived realities. It also reflects, in some part, the complex and ever growing iterations of Asian identity that continue to emerge from every corner of the Greater Boston area. These creative gestures are at once expressions of pain and resiliency, resistance, and celebration.”

The 25 exhibiting Boston-area artists include IJ Chan, Rachael Chen, Zoila Coc-Chang, Maria Fong, Melody Hsu (Yu-Hsuan), Claudia Kim, Eugene La Rochelle, Brenda Lau, Heidi Lee, Madeline Lee, Niki Li, Julia Madden, Jaspreet Mahal, Yuko Okabe, Matthew Okazaki, Jennifer Jean Okumura, Ponnapa Prakkamakul, Christina Qi, Neha Rayamajhi and Kshitiz KC, Michael A. Rosegrant, Mel Taing, Melissa Teng, Jessica TranVo, Tran Vu, Lily Xie.

The partnering organizations for the exhibition include Asian Glow Boston, Asian American Resource Workshop, Dorchester Art Project, Pao Arts Center, Network for Arts Administrators of Color, Subcontinental Drift Boston.

The exhibition coordinator is John Quatrale, Executive Director of Unbound VIsual Arts and exhibition assistance from Sofija Chroneos, Rachel Hargraves, Julia Marcantonio, Sequoya Molzan, and Cynthia Bryndis Schilling.

Leslie Anne Condon is a Boston-area visual artist and emerging arts scholar. Her artwork explores the intersections between visual culture, social ritual, and global consumer culture. As a scholar, Leslie is interested in Critical Race Art History and issues of representation in the arts. Her recent work addresses the complexity of identity within immigrant communities of color, as well as rituals of mourning.

Leslie graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2004 with a minor in the Fine Arts. She attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts as a Diploma student and earned her Post Baccalaureate in Fine Art 3D from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2011.

Unbound Visual Arts​ (UVA) is a 7-year-old local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of artists and art enthusiasts based in Allston-Brighton.
