Expand your visual vocabulary with the genre of a landscape. Pastel is a perfect medium to translate the luminous light, deep contrast and varied environments of nature. The class will cover: creating deep space through the principles of atmospheric perspective, approaching sky and water, foliage and mountains, rocks and other elements in nature. The formal topics of composition, color theory, and pastel application will be discussed. The structure of the online class will include slide and sample artwork presentations on the topics mentioned, demonstrations, individual discussions via zoom breakout rooms (splitting from the main online class meeting), and group critiques through on-screen work-sharing and live discussions. For the duration of the course, students will have access to individual communication with the instructor between classes.
Materials: soft pastels (any set here or any other), blending stumps, pastel paper (white pad or toned pad or any other preferred paper pad or single sheets in any size), basic drawing supplies: graphite pencils and/or pastel/conté pencils for initial sketching, eraser, sketchbook or any other sketching paper for preliminary work.
