Why is it important to resurrect a 1957 “classic” American play written by Eugene O’Neill, a white playwright with a complicated relationship to actors of color, and re-envision it with a cast of African-American actors? Actors, directors, producers and audiences of color throughout the mid—20th and early 21st centuries have felt a drive to re-envision classic plays, and even today, when playwrights of color are writing new plays specifically for actors and audience of color, there is a sense of unfinished business, and a need to revisit and explore the characters and plays of the past. In this free community event, the cast of the WaltersWest/Fort Point Theatre Channel’s new production of Long Day’s Journey Into Night will share excerpts from the play accompanied by discussion with the artistic team about the history and inspiration behind the production, the importance of making stories and roles available to everyone, and the challenges of self-producing and creating the art you want to see in the world.
