Presented by Park Avenue Congregational Church at Park Avenue Congregational Church

Join us for a special program of Renaissance Choral Music for the holiday season by Park Avenue Congregational Church’s Artists in Residence, Vox Lucens, on January 26th at 3 PM.  Under the direction of Holly Druckman, they will perform music from across Europe in a program that spans more than two hundred years of Renaissance music. The ensemble began in 1998 as a group of friends who got together to sing Madrigals for the enjoyment of it. Vox Lucens is Latin for "a shining voice" and refers to the ensemble’s sound as well as their desire to shed light on the wide variety of a cappella Renaissance repertoire with its rich polyphonic structures and luminous sound.

Tickets in advance are $18 adults and $12 seniors and students, and at the door $23 and $15. Advance-price tickets can be reserved by calling 781-643-8680 to be picked up at the door. A post-concert reception will take place where Vox Lucens’ CDs will be available for purchase.

On January 26th at 3 PM, the beautiful acapella voices of Vox Lucens will again grace the sanctuary of the Park Avenue Congregational Church in Arlington Heights, MA.  Tickets in advance are $18 adults and $12 seniors and students, and at the door $23 and $15. Advance-price tickets can be reserved by calling 781-643-8680 to be picked up at the door. A post-concert reception will take place where Vox Lucens’ CDs will be available for purchase. Vox Lucens will perform Renaissance music celebrating the Christmas Season, featuring music by Franck, Palestrina, Clemens, Gabrieli (Andrea and Gionvanni), Sweelinck, and anonymous English carols. This is how their Director, Holly Druckman, describes the program: “The idea behind this program is simple: it loosely follows the emotional journey of the Christmas story (from the Annunciation to the arrival of the Magi), and alternates large, late-renaissance polyphonic music with intimate Medieval carols. These two types of music are meant to act as foils to one another, to bring out the special qualities unique to each. We have worked hard to give both styles the musical affect they require and deserve. The large motets are grand and often symphonic in scope, while the carols are light and charming: you might even leave the performance whistling one of them!” Vox Lucens came together in 1998 to explore the Renaissance sacred and secular acapella repertoire. Under the direction of Jay Lane from 1999 until 2018, and Holly Druckman beginning in 2018, Vox Lucens developed programs that combine popular favorites with lesser-known works, often in their own editions. The choice of the name Vox Lucens (Latin for “a shining voice”) echoes not only the ensemble’s sound, but also the hope to shed light on the wide variety of styles and textures of the Renaissance repertoire. The singers come from diverse backgrounds.  Many have advanced musical training, and other singing affiliations.  Members of the group have performed in musical styles ranging from opera, folk, and Celtic, to Gilbert and Sullivan. They have performed locally in concerts and church services as well as with dance and theater groups.  See www.voxlucens.net for more information about the group. Holly Druckman is quickly gaining recognition as a smart, sensitive performer of early and contemporary music. She is in her second season as the Music Director of Vox Lucens. Ms. Druckman received her MM with academic honors from the New England Conservatory, studying Historical Musicology and Choral Conducting, with a focus on Renaissance Polyphony. She is the 2018 recipient of NEC's Gunther Schuller Award. Park Avenue Congregational Church is located at 50 Paul Revere Road at the intersection of Park Avenue and Paul Revere Road, 1 block from Mass.
