Can Faith and Politics be Separated?

Presented by JCC Greater Boston at Leventhal-Sidman JCC

As we move closer to the 2020 elections, the United States has become bitterly divided on issues ranging from reproductive rights to fake news. JCC Greater Boston is hosting the Jonathan Samen Hot Buttons, Cool Conversations Discussion Series begging the question Where is our country headed? In this 2019-2020 season, we are discussing the pivotal role our nation’s laws, religions, and leadership play in shaping our community. We’re seeking answers to critical questions that define us not just as a community, but as humans in a constantly and rapidly changing world.

Can Faith and Politics be Separated? will be the topic of the next panel discussion in the series on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at 7:30pm at the Leventhal-Sidman JCC (333 Nahanton Street) in Newton. Communities across America are divided over politics, culture, identity, and the direction of the country. Are religious congregations any different? How do religious leaders today navigate deeply divisive issues — like the Middle East, gay marriage, abortion, the immigration crisis — in their own communities? We will look at the intersection of faith and politics and ask religious leaders their views on engaging in social activism. We’ll examine the role religious leaders play in such partisan times.

Panelists:
Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, Director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism

Rev. Rhina Ramos, United Church of Christ Minister

Dr. Khalil Abdur-Rashid, Muslim Chaplain at Harvard University

Moderator: James Carroll, Author and former Boston Globe Columnist
