Landscape Lectures: Ron Henderson

Ron Henderson is a landscape architect and educator. He is Professor and Director of the Landscape Architecture + Urbanism Program at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago and has held previous appointments at Harvard Graduate School of Design, Pennsylvania State University, Tsinghua University, and Rhode Island School of Design. He is founding principal at L+A Landscape Architecture, based in Newport, Rhode Island, whose work in North America includes the Lynch Courtyard at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Other selected recent projects include the Newport Art Museum Campus (Newport, RI), Historic Newport Town Spring (Newport, RI), Elizabethan Theater at Chateau d'Hardelot (Condette, France), Balders Gate (Oslo, Norway), Yinzhou Central Park (Ningbo, China), China Pavilion Roof Garden at Expo 2010 (Shanghai, China), as well as gardens in North America, Europe, and Asia. Ron is Senior Fellow of Garden and Landscape Studies at Dumbarton Oaks, a Japan-US Friendship Commission Creative Artist Fellow, and a Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects. An exhibition of his sketchbooks of Japanese cherry blossoms, Sakura Orihon, were exhibited at the U.S. National Arboretum, Washington, D.C. in Spring 2018 and re-installed in Spring 2019. He is author of The Gardens of Suzhou, which was published in 2013 by University of Pennsylvania Press and frequently writes and lectures on Asian garden history and contemporary Asian landscape architecture.
