Coastal rivers have been important through out the history of New England. In this presentation you will hear the tale of the Coonamessett River, which first served as bountiful provider of food, so full of herring that a war was fought over the harvest, but was later straightened and dammed for waterpower and agriculture. Now through restoration, this crown jewel of Falmouth is coming full circle back a river with bountiful fish and natural scenic beauty. Dr. Deegan will highlight river restoration successes in New England and explain how these techniques are being used to restore the Coonamessett River. She will show how her work on herring migration has helped shape the restoration and describe how restoration is expected to increase biodiversity.

Dr. Deegan studies the consequences of human alterations of the landscape on rivers from the Arctic to the Amazon as well changes to estuaries. She has a particular fondness for understanding how to rivers changes affect fish migration and abundance. Linda leads the Fishscape project that examines the effect of climate change and landscape alterations on Arctic grayling migration, and volunteers with the Coonamessett River Trust, which is dedicated to bringing new life to the river.

Mass Audubon's Broadmoor Wildlife Sanctuary and Conservation Science Department host this informal series. This event is also co-sponsored by Jack's Abby.
