Northeast by Far East featuring multi-instrumentalist Yazhi Guo

Presented by Boston Musica Viva at Pickman Concert Hall, Longy School of Music (Bard College)

Acclaimed by music critics as “the best suona player in China,” Guo Yazhi makes his BMV debut as our featured soloist in a complex and intriguing work by Pulitzer Prize-winner Zhou Long. In Metal, Stone, Silk, Bamboo, Yazhi will showcase an array of unique woodwind instruments chosen in consultation with the composer that are rarely seen or heard in the West.

Representing the West (by way of the Northeast) are four composers with long ties to BMV: A world premiere by MIT’s Peter Child, and previous BMV commissions by Joyce Mekeel, William Kraft, and Scottish composer David Horne. Child returns after a successful world premiere on our Family Concert last season. Mekeel was a longtime peer and friend of BMV Music Director Richard Pittman based in Boston. Kraft, based in LA, has proven a BMV favorite with a particular talent writing for percussion, his primary instrument. And Horne, while from across the pond, wrote Spike for us while he was studying at Harvard.
