There’s a new theatrical option in town and it promises to be like none other.  Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT) new performing arts series MIT Performing, will have a distinct voice in the Boston theatrical landscape. Curated by MIT Professor Jay Scheib, MIT Performing will present works by performers who have had a significant impact in the field of theater.

Launching MIT’s innovative series will be Andrew Schneider and Company’s NERVOUS/SYSTEM. Integrating projection, innovative lighting and staging, and 3D sound spatialization, NERVOUS/SYSTEM tell everyday human narratives hidden in plain sight. This fully immersive experience follows the path of seven individual and entirely disparate narratives through the history of the planet and explores how interconnected all events truly are. Borrowing concepts from physics and philosophy like loop gravity, eternalism and block time, NERVOUS/SYSTEM attempts to collapse linear time, putting effect before cause and pushing us to think about our realities and how we as humans affect one another in profoundly new ways.

NERVOUS/SYSTEM runs November 9-11, and MIT Performing continues into 2019 with Adrienne Truscott’s THIS (Feb. 7-9), Ayesha Jordan’s New works in progress (Feb. 15), and Lisa Dawn’s “A Body of Beckett (Feb. 21).

“The inaugural season of MIT Performing, a presenting and prototyping series, approaches theatre as a dynamic and vital platform for research-based performance practices,” says Curator and MIT Professor Jay Scheib.

Known for genre-defying works of daring physicality and the integration of new (and used) technologies in performance, Scheib’s recent staging of Na’ama Zisser’s new opera Mamzer/Bastard for the Royal Opera House in London played to packed houses at the Hackney Empire Theater. His new hit musical Bat Out of Hell is currently running in London’s West End at the Dominion Theater and in the fall will begin a North American tour with extended runs at the Ahmanson Theater in L.A., the Wang in Boston and New York’s City Center Theater. A Professor of Theater Arts at MIT for more than a decade, Professor Scheib is delighted to announce this collaboration with the MIT Center for Art, Science & Technology (CAST) to present a series of innovative performances in MIT’s recently completed theater arts facility developed as the new home for the program in Theater Arts.
