ArtsBoston is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the arts.
the harvard generalist aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration between conventionally distinct branches of knowledge, through contemporary artistic strategies. we want to produce art for this community – for budding thinkers who are excited by their disciplines. we believe that the only way to forge the interdisciplinary connections that are part of the harvard mission is by implementing small, sustained, temporary ruptures in the methodology traditionally implemented by each discipline, as exercises. in the digital age, representations of knowledge and access to information can be material, spatial, tangible – and we should perceive our tangible world as containing an enormous amount of information. we emphasize that exposure to and participation in art can stimulate the development of tools for creative problem solving, helping students become better scientists and humanists, better lawmakers and businesspeople, better engineers and administrators. the generalist will provide a venue for wit, mockery, irony, games, puzzles, and other forms of play within a contemporary arts discourse. we are a productive organization rather than a social one, in that the activity of the club is centered on producing projects for the consumption of people in the community, outside the club.
