Strand Theatre

The historic Strand Theatre opened in 1918 as New Englands first million dallar movie and vaudeville palace, evolving to “talkies” in the 1930s and operating as a film theatre until the late 1960s. Filling the need for a multi-cultural entertainment venue in the 1970s, the Strand was transformed into an elegant performance center and began hosting concerts from all genres of music which has continued throughout the decades. From aspiring artist to music legends, the list of Artists who have graced the historic Strand stage are Tracey Chapman, Duke Ellington, Al Green, B.B. King, Jerry Lewis, LL Cool J, New Kids on the Block, Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Phish, Public Enemy, Ruben Studdard, and Til Tuesday, among many others. The stage has also hosted comedy performances, sporting events, plays, musicals, and dance performances, including Boston Ballet and continues to feature independent movie premieres. Managed by the City of Boston since the late 1970s, the 1,400-seat theatre complex is home to two galleries for visual art exhibitions.
