ArtsBoston is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the arts.
According to its mission over the last 14 years, Opera del West under the leadership of Artistic Director, Eve Budnick, has performed Baroque operas and works written in the last decade, a night of Cabaret songs and Bel Canto works, operas in collaboration with local orchestras, and operas with local ballet schools. We have created works that included ornamented Da Capo arias and ragtime music, operetta scenes and staged art songs, works that catered to young children and works that dealt with highly adult issues of murder, violence and the apocalypse.
Its secondary mission is to allow young professional singers who have graduated from New England conservatories to perform roles in a smaller venue that they hope to sing in larger venues in the future. These singers were able to perform leads and supporting roles in such works as: The Marriage of Figaro, Don Pasquale, Alcina, Cendrillon, and Hansel and Gretel, in French, German, Italian and English.
Traditionally, Opera del West’s mission is to perform fully staged operas in an intimate setting to Metrowest audiences, and beginning in 2018 with a Bernstein centennial production of Candide, performing at the BCA for Boston area audiences. This will be our first opportunity to create a Virtual opera with the chance to be accessible to all.
