Cropped, abstracted, veiled, and even erased, fragmented figures depicted in works by artists as varied as Alexander Archipenko, Bill Jacobson, John Singer Sargent, Beverly Semmes, Edward Weston, and Francesca Woodman suggest that the part is often more evocative than the whole.
