Teen Foundry Intensive Workshop

Learn the basics of sand casting and pattern making. Students learn ancient metal casting techniques as they translate into both modern industrial foundries and art casting. After learning the fundamentals of metal casting, students develop their ideas and carve patterns from plaster blanks for their sand molds.

Green sand is used to make sand molds of the plaster patterns. Students get a safety overview for pouring metal, then students watch the molten aluminum flow into their mold! Students learn cleaning techniques to finish their castings to take home.

The first day we will just be working in the studio, so students should wear closed-toe shoes. The second day we will be working with molten metal, so students should wear durable closed-toe leather shoes, non-frayed jeans, a natural fiber shirt, and something to tie back long hair. Students should also pack a lunch or bring money to buy a lunch for both days.
