Pencil vs. Crayon: Lane’s Evolving Drawing Style on Paper

Adjunct Maritime Curator Erik Ronnberg, Jr. presents an illustrated talk about Fitz Henry Lane. While Lane’s pencil sketches on paper are numerous they only hint at his debt to lithography, due to their minimal treatment of subject matter.

Adjunct Maritime Curator Erik Ronnberg, Jr. presents an illustrated talk about Fitz Henry Lane. While Lane’s pencil sketches on paper are numerous they only hint at his debt to lithography, due to their minimal treatment of subject matter. In two finished drawings from his later years and an over drawing in a sail loft book of plans, we see his debt to lithography in aspects of light, values and detail.
