BOSTON – “One if by land, two if by sea.” On Thursday, April 20, Old North Illuminated in Boston’s North End will re-enact the famous signal that lit the way for the American Revolution. The celebration recognizes the 300th anniversary of Old North Church and the historical events of April 18, 1775, when allies of Paul Revere hung two lanterns from Old North Church’s steeple as a warning to their fellow Patriots that British troops were on the move. After passing critical information to the signal holders, Paul Revere began his iconic midnight journey to Lexington and Concord. The courageous actions of Revere and the lantern bearers are an inspirational reminder of the power of active citizenship to create a more perfect union that reflects the promise of liberty and justice for all.

This year’s event will be held in person from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Old North Church & Historic Site, located at 193 Salem Street in Boston. The celebration will feature the Middlesex County Volunteers Fife & Drums; a rousing reading of the poem “Paul Revere’s Ride” by Susan Tran, Emmy Award-winning Anchor and Reporter for NBC Boston; remarks from the 2023 Lantern Award honoree Annette Gordon-Reed, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and MacArthur “Genius Award” recipient; and a lively reception with lantern signals lighting up the sky.

Proceeds from the event will support Old North Illuminated’s virtual and on-site programs, which aim to inspire children and adults alike to consider the ways in which they can build a more just and equitable world.
