Fantastical to Familiar: Music of Menotti and Thompson

Menotti’s Unicorn, Gorgan and Manticore is a magical operetta that depicts the phases of life. In Frostiana, Frost’s seemingly simple poetry is matched by seven beautifully-crafted movements capturing the essence of Frost’s poems.


Gian Carlo Menotti’s charming madrigal opera, The Unicorn, The Gorgon, and The Manticore, is one of the composer’s most accomplished works. In it, he introduces us to three mythical beasts that represent three phases of life: young, middle, and old age. Under the guise of a fairy tale, he delivers a caustic critique of affectation and materialism. With a small orchestra and an engaging range of musical textures, this piece is sure to delight.
