Exoplanetary: A Discovery Day of Workshops and Music

On Sunday, October 6th from 3-6pm at the Somerville Armory, Multiverse is hosting “Exoplanetary,” a discovery day of activities for the whole family, including a workshop for children, community hour and collaborative concert.

The children’s workshop is called “All Planets Great & Small” and begins at 3pm. It is a Dalcroze-based music and movement class, exploring the scientific marvels of space exploration. Members of the Integral Steps staff, who are licensed Dalcroze Licentiates, musicians, and scientists themselves, will be leading the workshop, which is open to kids ages 4 -12.

Following “All Planets Great & Small” is the Spectrum Lab Exclusive Preview, a community hour with Dr. Roy Gould of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Dr. Gould will present the latest research on exoplanets and the incredible detective work used to reveal their presence as shadows cast upon distant stars before give a demonstration of the Spectrum Lab and open it up to the public for the very first time!
During this time, Integral Steps will lead exoplanet art activities for children and families to work on together, and students from the Yamaha School of Boston will perform their own exoplanetary compositions. Adults can enjoy drinks from the bar and social time in addition to using the new Spectrum Lab program to learn about exoplanets.

The 5pm concert, “Shadows of Exoplanets” interweaves short dynamic lectures by Dr. Gould with live musical performances. Celebrating the upcoming launch of NASA-Smithsonian’s Spectrum Lab website, Dr. Gould will share his work on developing this public tool for uncovering exoplanets’ atmospheres, temperatures, and ultimately – their potential for life. These short talks by Dr. Gould will tie into the works performed during the concert, providing a new way to conceptualize space exploration that is interesting to and accessible by people of all ages.
