Eve and Adam: A New Take on a Very Old Story (Newton)

Rising MIT composer Elena Ruehr’s Eve, composed in 2014, takes its familiar text from Genesis, but rather than the traditional retelling, poses an honest question: was gaining knowledge of good and evil such a terrible thing? Arvo Pärt’s Adam’s Lament is more traditional in interpretation, though in Pärt’s signature haunting musical style. Pärt has said that the fallen Adam of the work represents “humankind in its entirety and each individual person alike.” Hildegard von Bingen’s Eve and Adam were God’s experiment gone askew, requiring his mother to fix it.
