Franz Schubert began a string trio in 1816 (at the age of 19), and then, as with his famous “Unfinished” symphony, never completed it. This inventive opening movement and tender Andante fragment are a testament to Schubert’s ability to bring emotional resonance to a simple phrase. Benjamin Britten was also 19 when he wrote, more than a hundred years later, the Phantasy Quartet for oboe and strings, a masterfully constructed work of pastoral elegance. American Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Jennifer Higdon pays homage to Samuel Barber’s iconic Summer Music through her Autumn Music for woodwind quintet and Alec Wilder’s characteristic humor emerges in his delightful duos for horn and cello. Finally, French composer Guillaume Connesson replicates the raw energy of electronic music through Techno Parade for flute, clarinet, piano, and… toothbrush!
