Concord Orchestra Pops 2019

Maureen McMullan performs the premiere of Benard Hoffer’s arrangement  A Johnny Mercer Songbook and leads a sing-along of music from Roger and Hammerstein’s Sound of Music.  Ms. McMullan is a Scottish soprano trained in classical and contemporary music.  She has sung professionally in many styles including jazz, pop, folk, musical theater, R&B, and oratorio. She is assistant chair of the Voice Department at Berklee College of Music.

Johnny Mercer (1909-1976) was a prolific lyricist with a career spanning half a century. He collaborated with many of the great song writers of the day as well as writing his own songs.   For his medley, Bernard Hoffer chose familiar jazz standards “That Old Black Magic”, “Out of this World”, “Laura”, “Blues in the Night”, “Skylark”, “Midnight Sun”,  “Autumn Leaves”, “Moon River”, “Goody Goody”,  and “Something’s Gotta Give”.

The orchestra also performs John William’s Theme from Harry Potter, Bizet’s Carmen Suite No. 1,  Suppé’s Light Calvary Overture, and Richard Roger’s Slaughter on Tenth Avenue.  Principal clarinet Grant Anderson performs the Rondo from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto.

The performances feature table seating, refreshments and a cash bar.  Come early before the music starts to be first in line to purchase some delicious snacks and beverages.
