Choral Concert: Six Centuries of Female Composers

A Concert Presenting Choral Works of Women Composers

The contribution of women to the musical repertoire has long been overlooked, and this concert celebrates the works of several women composers. The earliest composers include Maddalena Casulana, Vittoria and Raffaella Aleotti, and Isabella Leonarda. The eighteenth and nineteenth century composers include Mary Hudson, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, and Amy Beach, who lived into the twentieth century. Two women of extraordinary musical talent and ambition who have gained recognition in the twentieth century include New England native, Mabel Daniels, and Vermont resident Gwyneth Walker.

A featured work to be performed by the Arlington-Belmont Chamber Chorus is a newly commissioned piece, Voyage, by Adria Stolk, Boston area composer and assistant professor at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. This performance will be accompanied by the Semiosis Quartet.
