The Black Heritage Trail® explores the history of the 19th century African American community of Boston. The trail consists of 14 sites and begins at the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial on Beacon Street. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Boston’s free African American community led the nation in the movement to end slavery and to achieve equal rights. FREE | Currently free tours are available Monday through Saturday at 1 pm. Tours meet at the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial opposite the Massachusetts State House. They are 90 minutes long and conclude at the Museum of African American History.
