“Beyond the Binary” was born from the general lack of awareness and understanding surrounding the gender nonconforming community. Since 2016, local queer photographer Alex Mancini has been meeting individually with non-binary, genderqueer, and trans folks in these communities and capturing authentic portraits of them in their own chosen spaces along with conducting in-depth interviews that focus on who the subjects are, their experiences, and how they fit into the world. The project has included over 60 people so far. 19 portraits will be on display at the Lincoln Arts Project, along with text from those interviews. There will also be a number of installed booklets of past interviews that could not be included in this show. The project began in Massachusetts, but has been slowly expanding with the goal of interviewing people across the U.S. The images in this show were taken in a number of different states.
“Beyond the Binary” highlights a community that is rarely given a platform to share their stories, and those stories are not often seen or heard by the general public. This show will hopefully serve as both a learning experience for those who are not familiar with these concepts, and a restorative experience for those who see themselves in the images. One of the major goals of the project is to create more dialogue around the concepts of gender and identity, and to establish more bridges of understanding between communities.
