Anna Eliot Ticknor founded the first correspondence school in America in 1873, it was known as the Society to Encourage Studies at Home. For a $2 annual fee any woman over the age of 17 living in a location with mail delivery could take one of 39 courses by simply exchanging letters with a female teacher in the Boston area. If a student was unable to purchase the course materials needed, they would be sent to them on loan from the
