An Ancient Tragedy: Director Sarna Lapine and The Rape of Lucretia

Emmy Award-winning journalist Joyce Kulhawik sits down with rising stage director Sarna Lapine about the BLO new production, her critically-acclaimed directorial debut on Broadway, and what it’s like to direct an opera about rape today.

Who was Lucretia? A woman violated, a symbol against the dangers of tyranny, perhaps a mere legend—yet she endures after thousands of years and hundreds of artistic depictions. As we look to BLO’s upcoming production of Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, we consider this allegory of political upheaval, sexual violence, and the struggle for power, both as an artifact of its time and as a tale whose resonance today is striking.
