CAPPELLA CLAUSURA is one of this country’s leading ensembles focusing on the research and performance of music by women composers. Now celebrating its tenth year under the inspired leadership of founder Amelia LeClair, the professional SATB vocal ensemble presents engaging performances of "twelve centuries of new music"–from the middle ages to yesterday’s fresh ink–sung a cappella, with continuo or with chamber orchestra as called for by the repertoire. Program highlights have included history’s first opera, by the Medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen; major choral works with orchestra by Clara Schumann, Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, and Marianna von Martines ("the female Mozart"); and revelatory performances of works by Vittoria Aleotti, Isabella Leonarda, Barbara Strozzi, Rebecca Clarke, Patricia Van Ness, and Hilary Tann, among many others. The group’s name refers to its original focus on music by 15th-16th century cloistered nuns (said to be "in clausura"). But now, that name is retained as a metaphor, reminding us of our mission to "unveil" music by women composers throughout history and bring it into the public sphere. In 2014, CAPPELLA CLAUSURA released its first commercial recording: the world premiere of the complete Madrigals of Renaissance prodigy Vittoria Aleotti. The ensemble has expanded its presentation of music by women to include music by their colleagues and influences. This year, alongside the music of Chiara Cozzolani, Raffaella Aleotti, Hilary Tann and Hildegard of Bingen,  the ensemble performs works of Dietrich Buxtehude,Tomas Luis de Victoria, Giovanni da Palestrina, Arvo Pärt, and Eric Whitacre.
