One of Boston's cultural treasures since 1807, the Boston Athenæummaintains the largest membership of any independent circulating library in the country. Visitors are welcome at no charge to the exhibitions and to see the first floor of the Library's National Historic Landmark building. The Boston Athenaeum is located on Beacon Hill steps from the State House. Complimentary tours for the public are given Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:00 p.m. year round, by advance reservation at 617-227-0270. Members may check out books, attend events, discussion groups, and receptions, and have exclusive access to the book stacks, members' reading rooms, lounge, and fifth-floor patio. New members are always welcome.
